Thank-you all for the warm welcome I've received at Maihiihi School. The Family Night on the 2nd was a great opportunity to meet many of you. I'm looking forward to the first Community Assembly this Friday when we'll celebrate the work of our seniors and be introduced to our student leaders.

 

It's good to see Kapahaka up and running at school. Thanks to Tomairangi Roore’s offer to support this. We are still keen to have another adult who might be able to play basic guitar and/or support the boys. This could be anyone from the community. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to come and watch a practice. The group meets again on Friday the 16th, 12.45 in the Library, and then practices will be on Tuesdays at 2.00pm for 45 minutes. (A change of time may be needed in the future to fit in with the availability of our adult helpers.)

 

I've been very impressed with your school pool. I haven't previously come across a school pool that's heated, though I'm sure there are others. Thank-you to parents/whaanau who are part of the roster for water testing, cleaning, etc., as the pool is a huge asset. We're fortunate to be part of the Swimming Waikato programme for building water safety skills and confidence in students. All teachers have recently taken part in professional development with the Regional Swimming and Water Safety Officer and lessons for our students will continue through the term. 

 

With the continuing warm weather we have ensured every classroom has sunscreen. If your child has an allergy or sensitivity to the regular Cancer Society sunscreen please send them with an alternative, with their name on it, and a letter/note confirming their need for it.

Important reminders to all parents;-

SCHOOL HOURS - 9am - 3pm Mon - Firday
Please have your child/ren at school no later than 8.50am daily so that all bags, bookbags etc are sorted before the first bell at 9am.

LATE STUDENTS - If you child is arriving at school after the first bell at 9am please go straight to the school office with your child to sign them in on the electronic device located at the school office. Your child will them be given a late pass.

ABSENT STUDENTS - If your child is not going to be at school due to illness, appointments etc please notify the school office before 9am via School Loop App, Phone Call 07 873 2887 follow the voice prompts.

BUS - If your child is a regular bus pupil but will not be on the bus due to parent picking them up etc please ring the school on 07 873 2887 follow the voice prompts and leave a bus message.  If your child has a regular swimming, dance, sport lesson then please let the office know so that it can be recorded for the term.  

MONEY - Our school is now running a cashless system so please make ALL payments via Direct Credit.

Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a fantastic summer holidays. The students have all come back ready to learn. We have kicked off the year learning about Te tiriti o Waitangi. We have learnt about what a treaty is and why the treaty of Waitangi was written. As a class we have discussed and written our own classroom treaty. We have also learnt about some of the important people who were involved in the decisions and signing of Te tiriti o Waitangi. Over the last two weeks we have also begun exploring monochromatic art. This is art that is in one colour, this art uses hues, tints and shades. The students have completed a beautiful monochromatic portrait. Check some of these out in our class example of excellence. Swimming is well underway. This term we have been lucky enough to have teachers from the swim safe program come into school and help teach us some new skills in the pool. One skill we are working on is skulling, this helps us to conserve energy and move around the water on our backs.

Tēnā koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all and welcome back to Term 1 2024. I hope you have all had a fabulous Christmas and New Year break. It has been great hearing all of the stories from the tamariki about what they have been up to over the holidays!

We have been very busy over the last few weeks getting to know each other and setting our class routines. I have also been using some of this time to conduct reading, spelling, writing and math testing which is helpful to determine the learning needs of individual students, and of the class as a whole. 

I would like to welcome our new families to our kura, and our class. It has been lovely to get to know you all and I am looking forward to our year together in Ruma Rua.

 

 
Last week we learnt about the koru plant and turned this into a beautiful clay koru necklace! These will be coming home this week for you all to see. During this process we had to learn how to draw a koru, roll our clay (making sure it was smooth the entire time to prevent cracking) and curl the clay into a koru shape. Then we had to use toothpicks to make a design before letting it dry for 2 days. We then painted them and threaded our string through to create the necklace. I hope your children enjoy telling you all about them! 

On Thursday last week we began our swimming sessions with instructors from Otorohanga Pools. Room 1 joined us for this session and we focused on water safety, floating on our backs and submersion. We will continue these sessions for 3 more weeks and I am excited to see the progress made over this time. I hope to see you all at our swimming display in Week 7 where we will be showcasing the skills we have been working on during the term.

It has been a very busy start to Term 1 2024. The students in Room 3 have made a positive start with their learning and being together as a class, with a new teacher and some new students to our school. 
 We have worked on some 'getting to know each other' activities and we enjoyed doing the Continuing Thread activity where we created a web of things that linked us together. This showed the students that we had lots of things in common and things that were special to each of us, in our lives.
 We have been enjoying the sunny weather and being able to get into the pool each day. We are having four, once a week sessions with a tutor from Water Skills for Life, which is helping the students to develop their skills for keeping safe in the water and what to do if you get into trouble in the water. We are also practising how to do Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke, in preparation for the Small Schools Swimming Sports and COPS Swimming Sports.

It is hard to believe that we are already 3 weeks into our term! We have been swimming everyday, and have been working on a variety of things such as different activities and movements while we are submerged under water and survival floats/ stamina for this.

The combined 4 sessions we have had at Otorohanga Pool with Water Skills for Life have been around safety in and around bodies of water, floating positions and trying to conserve energy, confidence with manoeuvring with a life jacket on, recognising and reacting to emergency situations and some propulsion methods. We will be continuing with learning these skills in swimming this term.

We have been bringing our pepeha to "life" through visual arts. We have chosen different parts of our pepeha that we want to display and have both written and illustrated these on our circle art. Check out some of the  "circle" of our lives!!

Also in visual arts we are learning about colour theory, which we have been practicing and spending lots of time on. We are going to be making some simple "About Me" art, but first we have to choose the right colours to display in the background. So we have been exploring 6 different ways to use the colour wheel and pick colours (hues) as well as tints and shades. We have explored monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, triadic, tetradic and analogous colour combinations through paint.

I was super impressed with how easily and cooperatively all room 4 students came up with and agreed on 10 positive class expectations. But the fun part was finding a meme to match our expectations. Check out the awesome work we accomplished together!

It has been a great 3 weeks back at school - and we have ALOT more learning ahead!!!

This term for visual art room 1 are exploring monochromatic art. Over the last two weeks we have been working on our monochromatic portraits. During this process the students learnt about tints and shades by adding either white or black to their chosen colour. Here are a few of our finished pieces the students and myself are very proud of their pieces.
